Background information
Florfenicol is a veterinary antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in livestock and aquaculture. In Australia, florfenicol is currently approved for use in agriculture (cattle and pigs) and in November 2025 was approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Association (APVMA) for emergency off-label use in the salmon aquaculture industry in Tasmania.
